Fluid Dynamics and the use of Extraordinary Meridians in the Practice of Acupuncture
(Rayén Anton & Felix De Haas)

The Engaging Vitality Core Programme

Efficacy in acupuncture is grounded in a therapeutic engagement with Qi. Doing this well requires not only carefully listening to our patients with our ears, but also with our hands.

Although pulse, tongue and abdominal diagnosis are hallmarks of manual diagnosis in East Asian medicine, they represent just a fraction of the information available to us. The combined three-weekend Core Training Programme will enhance your ability to more directly perceive and make use of Qi in your clinical practice. This will result in a significant shift in your current thinking and practice of diagnosis and treatment.

Modules 2 & 3

The Engaging Vitality Core Training comprises three weekend modules. By the end of this three module programme you will have gained sufficient understanding of this approach to fully incorporate it into your practice in a meaningful way. In the first weekend we were introduced to the EV approach of palpation and listening.

In the second weekend additional palpation techniques are introduced which build upon the techniques from the first weekend. You’ll be presented with a global way of listening to the entire body in just a few seconds! This global assessement can quickly guide you to the problem area where you can apply your already learnt tools – Local Listening, Yang Rhythm listening, Manual Thermal Evaluation etc. You’ll also discover and learn how to determine whether a channel is actively involved in a problem area, and understand how it changes when the disturbance is resolved.

In the third weekend you’ll be building upon all the skills you have learned so far, and you’ll start working with the Yin Tide and the Fluid Body as a means to access the deepest states of stillness and coherence, and as way to tap into profound self-regulatory mechanisms. As a means to work with the Fluid Body you will be presented with the Morphology of the Extraordinary Vessels and how to work with it in clinic.

Techniques such as these allow us to respond more fluidly to the requirements of our patients Qi in a true dialogue. They are primarily diagnostic in nature but guide us through the whole treatment with constant feedback on each interaction and its effects. These techniques are readily intergrated with nearly any style of acupuncture. They provide a means for the fundamental concepts of East Asian Medicine to come to life in our hands.

On Modules 2 & 3 will learn how to:

  • feel the location of core restrictions anywhere on the body and quickly find the problem area
  • feel when a channel is directly connected to a problem area, and how to work with this
  • feel the Yin Rhythm and the Fluid body
  • use the Extraordinary Vessels as a gateway to work with the Fluid Body and facilitate deeper states of stillness
  • locate the most effective treatment point, accurately assess appropriate depth and angle of needle insertion, and obtain immediate feedback on the efficacy of your needling
  • feel whether your treatments have produced a clinically meaningful change
  • use the principal of effortless action (wu wei) in your practice

After completing the Core Training, further Advanced Training modules will be offered by the Engaging Vitality team to facilitate your on-going development. We look forward to continuing the EV journey with you in 2019!

Engaging Vitality European Crew

Rayén Antón
Rayén started her path into Chinese medicine in 2002 and graduated as TCM practitioner in the Fundación Europea de Medicina Tradicional China in Barcelona. She subsequently began studying various styles of Japanese acupuncture with Stephen Birch (Manaka style, Meridian Therapy, Shonishin) and graduated in 2007 as a Toyohari practitioner with the European Branch of Toyohari Association. In 2011 she began her journey with Engaging Vitality from the hands of Charles Chace, studying in Barcelona and Amsterdam, and fully now embraces this approach and has integrated it into her clinical practice. She became Charles Chace regular teaching assistant for his lectures in Europe, and later as an assistant for both Dan Bensky and Charles Chace in the Engaging Vitality seminars. Convinced that the study groups are vital for the development of these kind of skills, she started coordinating the Engaging Vitality study groups in Barcelona (and continues to do so). She also coordinates the Yearly Follow Up class Barcelona (YFUB) since 2012, a yearly gathering open to all practitioners of Engaging Vitality usually directed by Charles Chace. In 2016 she began teaching Module 1 of the Core Engaging Vitality training in Germany and Spain. The training for Module 3 in Europe and the USA has now been handed over to her by Charles Chace.

Ferdinand Beck, LAc
Ferdinand initialy spent 8 years in China and earned a medical degree at the University of TCM in Chengdu, PRC. He completed two years of internship at the University Medical Centre in Chengdu and learning with various masters of Chinese medicine in their private clinics. Later Ferdinand completed basic and advanced training in Toyohari Acupuncture. He has studied extensively with Dan Bensky and Charles Chace in the Enganging Vitality approach and now teaches and assists on the Engaging Vitality training programmes in Europe. Ferdinand Beck mainly treats his patients with both Chinese and Japanese acupuncture, extended and informed by the methods taught in the Engaging Vitality classes.

Felix De Haas
Felix is a transmitter of the Engaging Vitality approach to acupuncture. He has studied and practiced East Asian medicine for more than 30 years . His own journey has been through different aspects of East Asian Medicine with a strong focus on the classics and the surrounding body of East Asian philosophical literature and history. He has studied and practiced over a long time Japanese acupuncture techniques including Manaka and Toyohari. In the last decade he has specialized in the Engaging Vitality approach, but ultimately in the practice it is always an eclectic and individual approach. Felix has studied with several outstanding masters including Francois Ramakers, Bob Flaws, Stephen Birch, Yanagishta Sensei, Takai Sensei, Dan Bensky , Charles Chace and Volker Scheid. He has two clinics in the Netherlands and transmits the basic module program of Engaging Vitality and teaches also postgraduate courses about the philosophical and historical aspects of Classical East Asian Medicine.

Manuel Rodríguez Cuadras
I studied and practiced Chemical Engineering, Management, Graphic Design and several Martial Arts (Judo, TaeKwondo, Aikido), before going to Qi Gong, Taiji Quan and Chinese Medicine, which I studied both in Spain an in China, where I lived for 3 years. Back to Spain, studying with the most relevant teachers along the years, I graduated in Shonishin, Manaka, Keiraku Chiryo, Toyohari and Engaging Vitality, and also created the Acupuntura Biodinámica Clásica method. Besides practising them, I taught –and still teach- all the above systems, including TCM (of which I had the recognition of the Beijing University of TCM as a teacher) and with the exception of Toyohari. I authored or coauthored nine books and several papers. Presently I work both in clinic and in teaching in Spain and other places in Europe and Latin América. Details: http://www.mataifu.org
