Micro Acupuncture for
Degenerative Eye Diseases
As with all tissues in our body, the cells in our eyes are constantly regenerating and repairing old and damaged cells. These cells require healthy blood circulation in order to provide oxygen and nutrients for this process. When blood circulation to the eyes is compromised for any reason, these tissues degenerate.
For some people, their body cannot keep up with the amount of damage that is occurring because the tiny blood vessels that supply their eye with blood - nutrients and oxygen - become blocked or damaged.
In ALL cases of degenerative eye conditions, the circulation to the tissues of the eye is compromised and the eye cannot repair and regenerate at the rate that is required.
The cells in the back of our eye break down and regenerate every 2 days. So vision changes (both positive and negative) can happen quickly.
AcuNova and MA48 both help to increase blood circulation, specifically to the eye and retinal cells. This facilitates healing and regenerate of these cells. This specialised acupuncture also helps to wake up dormant retinal cells. It is important to recognise that this is not a cure, but a treatment that helps the eyes to heal from the damage caused by a disease.
MA48 and AcuNova are relatively new systems in comparison with traditional acupuncture. These systems were first developed in Europe in the 1980’s to treat pain and arthritis. Incidentally they were also found to be effective for degenerative eye conditions such as Macular Degeneration, Retinitis Pigmentosa, Stargardt’s Rod/Cone dystrophy, Glaucoma, Diabetic neuropathy, Ushers Syndrome and others.
I have trained in both Andy Rosenfarb’s MA48 programme and John Boel’s AcuNova system and currently offer courses of treatments in combination with my knowledge and training in Traditional Japanese Acupuncture. These microsystems cannot be used together but we can transfer from one to another if results are not forthcoming. Needles do not go into the eye.
What is MicroAcupuncture 48 (MA48)
MA48 points that are located on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet as well as around the eye socket. Mild Electro Acpuncture may also be used depending on the condition. More needles are used in this sytem. MA48 has become a recognised treatment protocol in the USA for treating eye conditions such as retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration, optic nerve atrophy and more.
What is AcuNova
AcuNova points are located on the joints of the fingers and toes. Needles will also be placed above the eye on the socket. AcuNova is ffective methods to treat vision loss from degenerative eye diseases. Common conditions AcuNova is helpful for include: Macular Degeneration, Retinitis Pigmentosa, Stargardt’s Rod/Cone dystrophy, Glaucoma, Diabetic neuropathy, as well as other degenerative diseases of the eyes.
Services Offered
For the best outcome there are definite protocols to be followed starting with a 1 week programme of 2 sessions per day with a minimum of 1 hour break in between and repeated for 5 days in a row - Wednesday through Sunday. The same schedule will be repeated as soon as possible if there is improvement. That is a total of 20 treatments. We then continue with one treatment a week until there is no more improvement.
Each client is treated individually from the time of enquiry through to initial consultation and subsequent treatments. I provide individualised education and assessment with an emphasis on personalised patient centred care.

Research
AcuNova
A pilot project with 27 patients suffering from dry age-related macular degeneration, were divided into three groups. The patients received intensive treatment over the course of four weeks.
Each of the three groups were treated with a variation of AcuNova. As expected, the results varied between the three groups.
In test group No. 3, 60% of the patients experienced a 15,6% improvement in sight. In test group No. 2, 70% of the patients experienced a 28,5% improvement in sight, and finally in test group No. 1, 80% of the patients experienced an improvement of 15-40% in sight. The average rate of improvement in sight for all groups was 27%. Follow-up evaluations are scheduled after 6 months and a year.
MA48
A recent study by researchers at John Hopkins University on the efficacy of Micro Acupuncture 48 for eye diseases has generated many inquiries from the public across the world. Micro Acupuncture 48 is a contemporary acupuncture system that may help patients who face vision loss.
The best results that Dr Rosenfarb has seen clinically are for pain, peripheral neuropathies, and for eye diseases. The most commonly treated eye conditions that have seen good results include macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, Usher’s syndrome, optic nerve atrophy and retinitis pigmentosa.
Alterntive Eye Care
The AAO task force has acknowledged that acupuncture may be useful as an adjunctive therapy or as an acceptable alternative to conventional treatment. Journal Ophthalmol 2001
